Disclaimer: Even though this blog post could be applied or used as food for thought regarding any animal rescue organisation it is mainly aimed at what we refer to as "Luxury Rescue". Organisations usually aimed at specific breeds, that may or may not have kenneling facilities and take in/rehome fewer than 10 - 15 dogs a month.
Why?Thoughts for Orgs We have noticed the absence of this question on every Adoption Application form we have seen.
The person applying to adopt get asked everything from how previous pets passed on, to the details of their home, family and divulging their household income, But we never see them be asked - Why? - Why have you considered adopting. Perhaps because "it's obvious"? Perhaps because no one has ever thought to ask. Perhaps because no one cares why a person or family wants to adopt - as long as they want to adopt. Why do we think it's an important question to ask? We're encountering more and more cases where potential adopters - whether they realise it or not - are choosing the adoption option not because of what adoption means (more on this in another post) but simply and only because it is cheaper than buying a puppy. We understand that many may be afraid to ask the question or even be rather angry at the suggestion to ask the question. Asking it may deter people from adopting. The answer is irrelevant. Whatever your reasoning is to not ask the question - we ask you to please step back and think about it more deeply than just "a dog needs a home, why ask why?" By asking a person why they want to adopt it would give you as the organisation trying to make sure the dog goes to the correct home and won't be re-entering the rescue system another layer to finding the right fit. We're not saying people that are adopting because its cheaper should not qualify to adopt a dog by any means (most people probably would not even be honest enough to admit that). What we are saying is by adding this question to your application form the answer you get will give you more insight to the applicant and better equip yourself to the dog you place with or suggest to them should they qualify to adopt. We would like to suggest to you to further extend the "Why?" to other parts of your application form. Most application forms, due to the way the questions are asked, give the impression that you as an organisation are asking people to fill out an order sheet and inadvertently promises that you will give them what they are asking for. Next thing those dealing with potential adopters that get frustrated or dissappointed because they have a sense of entitlement want to hit the roof. Step back and understand that it starts with the Adoption Application - it looks as though you are making a promise - and one that very often cannot be kept. So, change the way the application form is set-up. Don't be afraid to as Why? Why do you want that sex? Why do you want that age? Why do you want that breed? Get people to think about their application rather than it be a mere formality of a quick (sometimes offensive) for to fill in. Get more insight other than whether they have a big yard and a good income. Surely we all feel there's more to keeping a dog happy and giving them a good home than big yards and enough money? Thoughts for Potential Adopters If you read or scanned through the above you know what's coming. There needs to be more honesty, raw honesty, with yourself when you decide to adopt. The dog deserves that, your other pets and family deserves that and it is crucial for the adoption process to be successful. The trend for "failed" adoptions is rising. People seeing the posts of the dog that was adopted and then back up for adoption look at the picture and think "oh dear, problem dog". Sometimes that is the case. But unfortunately this is usually not the case anymore. People are critisizing animal rescue organisations for being to strict/harsh/unfair when it comes to adoption applications and yes, we agree, sometimes it does happen. The organisations can hardly be blamed. Our society of instagratitlement (instant gratification and entitlement) and cheapness has made Rescue and Adoption an entirely different monster. Because so many people have started using adoption as a cheap alternative and wanting what they want NOW and not wanting to put in the effort people used to understand comes with adoption organisations have the difficult task of not just finding a home that is loving and safe but that one needs to do some sort of character check on the person applying and their family to make sure that they won't give up within a week because the dog gave the cat a funny look. To add this level of assessment is an astronomical task as it takes up so much time (a discussion for another post). You can assist with this process by doing some self assessment first. If you can only answer because its cheaper than buying a puppy you need to further your line of questioning. Do you understand what adoption actually means? Thoughts for foster volunteers We will be discussing fostering in its own series. We would however like for people fostering, considering fostering or those that used to foster and stopped for whatever reason to also take a moment ad as yourself why? Why do you want to foster? Why did you stop? Why do you not want to foster? Please ponder this question and either comment below or e-mail us with your answer (info@beagle-in-mind.org). We would love to hear from you. As an educational trust our main mission since inception has been to assist and support owners so we can avoid seeing Beagles enter the rescue system through misunderstood perceived behavioural "problems". Through our journey it became clear that we cannot completely separate ourselves from the world that is rescue. We had tried to distance ourselves to some degree as we're simply unable to do what the "Rescue big wigs" do and couldn't take on what the volunteers that start up smaller orgs do. We had had some experience in observing quite a lot of politics within the NPO/Welfare/Rescue community which was another reason why we made the decision to be an educational trust with the hope of working alongside and behind orgs rather than be "yet another" animal welfare organisation. By aligning ourselves with one organisation the goal is to create awareness that we are here to work with any organisation to assist with the successful rehoming of Beagles or here to be a point of contact for owners and fosters that have questions. It is also a way of "getting our foot in the door" to make other organisations that rehome Beagles aware of what we do. We understand that Rescue Organisations have a full time job in just processing adoption applications, surrender forms, organising foster carers, vet visits, doing home checks, checking fosters have enough food and so forth that to still be on hand to answer questions, assist with behavioural issues and so forth makes it an almost impossible task. As Beagle in Mind this is where our intent is to pick up that slack. To get to the point of this series of posts: In the last months we have found ourselves ever more immersed in the world of Rescue Organisations. We have our own opinions that have formed and we try not to let this influence when we answer people's questions about the rescue process. Not only does each organisation have their own process and way of doing things - sometimes organised, sometimes not. - each situation with each different animal can change "exact protocol" at the drop of a hat. In other words - rescue is simply not an exact science. We have however come to realise that this (understanding "Rescue") also needs to form part of our educational mission. We have been experiencing many people contacting us confused, frustrated, sad, angry, feeling misled (to name a few) due to their dealings with rescue organisations. We would like to share with you in a few blog posts what we have generally experienced either ourselves or through the communication with people considering adoption or surrendering their hounds or chatting with people that work for and even head up animal welfare and rescue organisation. Please understand that these posts are not targeted at anyone or any organisation in specific. It is a tough "business" - the world of rescue - and it is impossible to keep everyone happy all of the time. We would like to give some tips to those out there wanting to adopt, those wanting to surrender as well as a few suggestions to recue organisations to keep in mind. Not everyone will agree, like I said, each org has its own way of doing this. These posts are intended to provide "food for thought". Whether it be for people running orgs to be reminded of things they once knew but forgot (as one gets so swept up in the "monster" that is animal rescue) or people out there wanting to adopt, have gotten frustrated in trying to adopt or have just gotten generally confused. We hope that everyone can read this series with an open heart and an open mind. If offense is taken, this is not our intention. All we want is for all parties concerned in the rescue process to step back and understand that there are other aspects to the process than what you see when you are busy with your part of the process - rescuing, adopting, fostering, surrendering. If you find any of what we say helpful or insightful please do share. It will find those meant to read it. We would love to hear your thoughts on anything. We learn from everyone's insights and so can others. Q & A
1a. Are your meals/products registered with the department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries? Yes
1b. Does each product carry a V number and could you supply it if a customer asks?
Yes, it is on our product label as well as all marketing material
Farmstyle - REG No: V28873
Farmstyle Select - REG No: V28872
Country Style Select - REG NO: V28871
Barnyard - REG NO: V28874
2a. Are your meals complete & balanced or complimentary?
Yes, all 4 varieties is complete and balanced and can be fed on its own as a complete meal with all the nutritional elements needed.
2b. What does it mean when you say something is a complementary meal as opposed to complete & balanced?
Our opinion with regards to complementary meals is a meal that has not got complete balanced ingredients to stand alone as a meal. It lacks certain nutritional components but can supplement your dog’s diet, for example when you want to add a bit of protein variety or your dog requires additional dietary components for whatever reason.

Part Two
Q & A
We asked the same questions to each raw food manufacturer. Questions we feel every customer should ask and to which they deserve answers.
1a. Are your meal/products registered with the department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries?
Yes, our meals are registered.
1b. Does each product carry a V-number and could you supply it if a customer asks?
Yes, each meal’s V-number is printed on the product label as stipulated by the department.
2a. Are your meals complete & balanced or complementary? Complementary.
2b. What does it mean when you say something is a complementary meal as opposed to complete & balanced?
We question the minimum daily requirements set by the Department, both in terms of how this is derived at and in terms of the supplements prescribed to attain the required levels.
We deliberately opted for ‘complementary’ status as we would rather add seasonal veg/fruit (e.g. blackberries) providing nutrients in natural format, than inorganic mineral components such as lime to reach a prescribed level of calcium for example.

Introduction from Raw Love for your Pets
If we follow a reasonably healthy and varied diet, we know over time we provide our bodies with the required nutrients to achieve optimum health. We don’t get all the nutrients our bodies need when we eat, for example, a tuna salad for lunch. But we (hopefully) consider the nutritional value of the food we eat as we nourish ourselves over time.
The same applies to our pets.

Understanding the Pet Food Industry & who regulates it
Before we continue it is important to understand who regulates the main stream pet food industry.
Why talk about pet food?
On Tuesday 10 April 2018 we will start part one of the processed food options. | We have done a lot of research so we can give you the known facts about various options of feeding so you can make an educated choice about what you feed your Beagle. We are not here to bad mouth any particular brand or food choice, only to present to you the understanding of what they state on their labels, ingredients and Guaranteed Analysis as on their packaging. The brands we do explore are what we have found most Beagle owners to be feeding and for the purposes of explaining only. We are not endorsed by any brand. Please read and view the entire series to make fully informed choices also taking into consideration knowing your pet, their health and their habits. We encourage you to do your own research as well as there is a lot of information that explains in more detail that of which we're only scratching the surface. We'll be looking at dried/processed food, raw diets as well as cooked diets and various supplement options. |
Can Kinesiology help with my Beagle's allergies?
Allergies seem to be be on the rise and it is driving many Beagle owners to the edge of dispair. There are so many causes for allergies outside of the commonly known environmental and nutritional factors. Fanny Lacroix from Human, Horse & Hound Kinesiology sheds some light on how Kinesiology can help get to the root of the problem and how it could be an amazing supplementary therapy. |
How can Kinesiology give relief to allergies?
Kinesiology helps your Beagle cope with allergies by balancing his or her immune system gently and naturally, and, where possible, by desensitizing him or her to the allergen. It can also identify the allergen if it is still unknown at the time of the session, as well as any support that may be necessary (homeopathy, flower essences, a change in diet, supplements, etc.). For your Beagle’s safety, your kinesiologist will always check for permission to desensitize – via muscle testing – before proceeding with the balance.
A kinesiology balance will help your dog’s body heal itself, by releasing the physical, mental, genetic and emotional stresses that may underlie the immune system imbalance that has led to the allergy. Emotional stress? Yes, allergies may indeed have an emotional cause. If your dog ate, inhaled or came into contact with a given substance while under emotional stress, he or she may eventually develop an allergy to that substance.

We are getting increasing numbers of inquiries from owners at their wit's end regarding their Beagles' allergies - from gunky ears to red, inflamed bellies and as excessive as hairloss, crusty skin and biting and scratching themselves raw. The vets usually prescribe cortisone but more and more owners would prefer not to go down this road as a sole long-term solution, looking for supplementary solutions. We asked Fanny Lacroix from Human, Horse & Hound Kinesiology to help us understand allergies. |
What are allergies?
Allergies can cause a host of unpleasant reactions: skin and ear problems, excessive paw biting and licking, digestive issues, runny and itchy eyes or nose and shortness of breath. These reactions are due to the hypersensitivity of your dog’s immune system to the allergen, and not by the allergen itself. Indeed, allergens are harmless substances for the most part. Any dog might get sick from eating raisins or chocolate, which have been proven to be toxic to our canine companions. However, contact with grass, for instance, only causes an adverse reaction in some dogs because of an imbalance in their immune system. Symptomatic treatments such as corticosteroids do provide temporary relief from inflammation and itching, but may also eventually lower immune function even more. Besides, they tend to push the illness back into the body. Let me explain: in an attempt to protect the internal organs, the body may “push” the illness out to the skin, which is the largest organ in the body, where it can be spread out and cause less harm. Cortisone creams may improve the appearance of the skin and reduce itchiness, but at the same time, push the illness back into the body, where it could damage the internal organs. We do not post anything we have not experienced positively and will never endorse anything in which we do not believe through positive experience.
Kinesiology and other healing modalities do not diagnose, cure or prescribe, as these activities are the prerogative of veterinarians. Kinesiology may provide a different, energy-based approach to allergy support, and potentially allow for a reduction in the use of corticosteroids. As a kinesiologist, I believe that allergies, just like other ailments, may have an emotional and/or mental aspect which is worth addressing. As such, this modality represents a valid complementary therapy to veterinary care.
